A day in the life of… Palesa Ranthamane, Finance Executive
What is your typical day like?
This is a new role developed to harmonise our client’s project management system and financial system, to maximise our financial system’s efficiencies and optimize their use. In addition, I do our client’s payroll for five countries. My day can vary from working onsite with the client’s project management team, to working with our Financial Controller in building databases and finding better ways to analyse and report data, and to speaking to tax authorities in several continents. I am glad to say no two days are the same.
What question do you get asked all the time?
Due to the nature of my role I usually ask the questions, usually related to client project and internal budget or in analysing where specific costs should be allocated. I support our Financial Controller in various interesting projects, so sometimes I am asked, “I have something you will enjoy, when do you think you will have some spare time?”
What have you learnt in this role?
That cultivating a good relationship with a client is paramount; I work on our client’s premises twice a week. In working hard to develop interdepartmental relationships, I have become part of the team and a point of reference for finance-related queries. Consequently I have developed a holistic view of the business, my role and approach. I have learnt to ask every day, “why” and “how can it be done better?”
What has been your biggest highlight this year at work?
My role has been the biggest highlight as I have been given an opportunity to build a new process and reporting tools independently and to find creative ways of solving challenges I come across. I have also gained extensive knowledge in payroll processing in the UK and globally. My Manager has recently enticed me into taking on a new payroll project and I am excited to sink my teeth into it.
