A day in the life of… Rob Jones, Finance Officer
What is your typical day like?
Although I generally have my week mapped out in advance – I usually find that I am constantly having to adapt to cater for my varied clients’ requirements.
I often find that I am juggling multiple tasks to ensure that I can respond as quickly as possible to client queries so that I can seamlessly fit into their day-to-day activities.
One moment I can be preparing management accounts, then switching to produce an international payment run, and then finalising an end of month payroll.
About 60% of my time is spent at clients’ premises, meaning that I become an extension to their core team.
What question do you get asked all the time?
The good thing about my role and my clients, is that there is so much variety meaning that I get new queries and challenges all the time. In fact, the only question that I regularly encounter is – “So, when are you next in the office?!”
What have you learnt in this role?
Having now worked with a variety of clients, I feel that my understanding of different industries has increased significantly during my time at Business Garage – ranging from Media to Construction, and many in-between.
I’ve also improved my multi-tasking and prioritising skills – ensuring that all my clients’ needs are always met.
What has been your biggest highlight this year at work?
Working very closely with a company to help sort out financial records that had slipped over a period of time, both before, and after the departure of their previous bookkeeper. This involved a thorough review of their system, discovering that many of their day-to-day procedures were not giving a fair reflection of the company’s performance. I was able to unravel many historic problems ensuring that the company filed their year-end accounts on time, and started the new financial year with a tidy accounts package.
